New online course launched: exploring the future of sustainable polyester production
The THREADING-CO₂ project is pleased to announce the launch of its second Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), “Polyester Production for the Textile Industry: Transitioning from Fossil Fuels to Sustainable Alternatives.”
Developed by LUT University as part of the THREADING-CO₂ project, the course is now available free of charge worldwide through the LUT MOOC Platform: https://mooc.lut.fi/
As the textile industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its environmental footprint, understanding the transition toward more sustainable polyester production has never been more important. This new course provides learners with a comprehensive overview of the challenges and opportunities associated with decarbonizing one of the world's most widely used textile materials.
Designed primarily for bachelor’s and master’s students, the course is also open to professionals, industry stakeholders, and anyone interested in sustainable textiles and climate action.
An added benefit for university students is that the course awards 2 ECTS credits, accompanied by an official certificate issued by LUT University. Depending on the regulations of their home institution, these credits may contribute toward degree requirements.
What will participants learn?
The course introduces learners to:
- The structure and importance of the textile and polyester industry;
- Conventional polyester production pathways based on fossil resources;
- Emerging sustainable alternatives that can support the industry's transition toward climate neutrality, including:
- Polyester recycling;
- Bio-based polyester;
- CO₂-based polyester, a key focus of the THREADING-CO₂ project.
By exploring these innovative approaches, participants will gain valuable insights into how circular and low-carbon solutions can help reshape the future of textile manufacturing.
Available in Multiple Languages
To maximize accessibility and reach learners across Europe and beyond, the course is already available in English, Finnish, French, German, Spanish, and Swedish.
