Search Outputs from SPIRE Projects
This new (beta) section of the SPIRE website allows you to browse and search through Outputs from projects across the SPIRE portfolio. Beyond just information on the main exploitable technologies and innovations, projects are also encouraged to use this framework to share other resources that could be of use to SPIRE stakeholders and other projects, such as education and training materials, links to published papers, demonstration photos, technology reviews, etc.
SHAREBOX - Agent Based Modelling (ABM) based Industrial Symbiosis (IS) network design
The research contributions presented in this document focus on (1) allocation of operational costs among firms involved in Industrial Symbiotic Relations (ISRs) and (2) incentive allocation to enable fair and stable implementation of Industrial Symbiotic Networks (ISNs). We model such relations as cooperative games and show the implementability in (one-to-one) ISRs. Then, for (many-to-many) ISNs, we show the cases in which monetary incentives are required and provide a practical multi-agent...
SHAREBOX - Public Policies creating barriers to the Circular Economy/Policies to improve incentives for Circular Economy in Europe
The Council of the European Union has adoptedin June 2016 the following Conclusion on the action plan for a circular economy:“CONSIDERS the active involvement of the private sector and other stakeholders across Europe and at the global level a key element for a successful and more effective transition towards a Circular Economy; ENCOURAGES the EU and the Member States, at all levels of government, to actively engage the private sector to promote cooperation, innovation and industrial...
SHAREBOX - On-site validation and impact assessment of field trials with real industrial conditions
This document describes the results obtained applying Life Cycle Assessment methodology to quantify benefits regarding primary energy consumption and mineral resource use in agreement with the SPIRE objectives“reduction in fossil energy intensity” and “reduction innon-renewable primary raw material input”as complementary indicator to greenhouse gas emissions.

Data fusion strategies for Multivariate Statistical Process Control (MSPC) combining diverse NIR-derived information or with other sensors were explored through real process examples.
IbD - Case Study 5 Process Intensification applied at Solid Reagents
The following case study is linked to industrial process intensification of flow systems. However, traditional (single-tube) plug-flow reactors have a critical downside, being the small residence time distributions for reactions requiring fast turbulent flows for good mixing. This limitation is particularly true for reactions involving solids, as plug flow reactors generally do not have the capacity to pump at speeds to keep solids suspended, leading to sedimentation and fouling at inlets/...
IbD - Case Study 4 Process Intensification applied at Pharmaceutical Processing
The case study concerns drying of a wet granulated material including a binder solution (purified water + povidone), that is currently dried in a multi-stage vibrating fluid bed dryer (Heinen).
IbD - Case Study 3 Process Intensification applied at Mineral Beneficiation
Mineral beneficiation processes chain incorporate several unit operations operated in continuous manner. In the crushing line the solid material (typically ore) is comminuted to the particle size of centimetre scale. In grinding line, water is added and the particles are processed further into micrometer scale using grinding mills. In this stage, the particles are classified and directed to downstream processes. Finally, the valuable material is recovered in flotation line, where chemicals...
IbD - Case Study 2 Process Intensification applied at Ceramic Powder
This case study has been focused on the intensification of the free-flowing powder preparation process involved in the very beginning of the ceramic tile manufacturing process. Nowadays, the most widely used ceramic tile shaping method is uniaxial pressing of spray-dried powder in hydraulic presses .The base case involves a wet route procedure where the initial free-flowing powder is obtained from a high solid content slurry, which itself produced by wet grinding of a mix of different solid...
IbD - Case Study 1 Process Intensification applied at Metallic Powder
The case study aims at solving the classification task of the high-density particles produced by ball milling at MBN Nanomateralia. The particles are used in the production of wear-resistant thick coatings.
IbD - State of the art in analytical technologies and metering solutions suitable for Process Intensification (PI) control
The original objectives of this project outcome can be summarized as follows:
• Definition of novel sensors and process analytical devices, advanced statistical and chemometric methodologies, and advanced process control for the intensification of processes involving solids handling.
• To provide tools for identification of intensified processes.
• To provide methods for utilizing indirect measurements in control.
• To provide control strategies for intensified...
