Public and private sector funding is regularly invested to develop new technologies and/or modify processes/products to bring resource and energy efficiency improvements. However, in order for EU stakeholders and industry to see the true value of these new technologies and modifications, and make informed decisions surrounding their adoption, a consistent approach is needed to assess the sustainability impact across the full value chain. This is particularly challenging when it comes to assessing sustainability across sector boundaries, or in a data lean environment.
For many years, the European process industries have recognised that assessment of sustainability is an essential component of their business management. As such, many sustainability indicators, tools and methodologies (collectively referred to as ‘tools’) already exist. However, these vary widely in their sophistication, applicability, maturity and usability thereby limiting broad cross-sectoral implementation.
The SPIRE Roadmap therefore calls for an industry-focused study of current approaches with the aim of identifying, evaluating and promoting a suitable collection of tools (a ‘toolkit’) for sustainability assessment across the process industries.
Specific activities of STYLE will include:

Project STYLE has three key objectives:
To identify best practice in sustainability evaluation, across multiple sectors in the process industries and through value chains, via inventory and classification of established approaches.
Project STYLE ultimately saught to identify and deliver a practical ‘toolkit’ that can be used by future EU projects and industry to assess the value (in sustainability terms) of new technologies and process modifications that seek to make resource and energy efficiency improvements. In lieu of finding an ideal collection of open access tools, STYLE has made high-level recommendations on the features and functions of an Ideal Toolkit.
Covering management of the project, its activities, its resources, its internal communications and its links to the Commission
Determining what tools are available to the Project, how they can be categorised, which should be tested in industry, identify opportunities to combine elements
Testing and critiquing selected tools and toolkits in real industrial processes
Ensuring that the approaches selected are soundly based
Identifying gaps in provision and how they might be addressed
Stimulating broad engagement throughout the project, and delivering those activities required for wider communications particularly those which accelerate implementation
Project STYLE is an industry-led consortium representing all of the SPIRE process industry sectors with numerous products that cross sector boundaries through their value chains. Partner organisations (Britest, ArcelorMittal, Carmeuse, Holcim, RDC Environment, IVL, Solvay, Tata Steel, Utrecht University and Veolia) bring together a wealth of knowledge and experience in the use of tools for sustainability assessment.
Industrial partners provide cross-sectoral opportunities for testing a limited number of tools that have been selected by all partners as showing potential for inclusion in the ‘toolkit’ and from which case studies can be prepared. The strong industrial participation in this consortium demonstrates the importance of testing tools in different industrial settings and cultures, so as to rigorously critique the tools’ usability, usefulness and barriers/ opportunities for greater uptake, particularly for users who are not LCA specialists.
The involvement of academia, research organisations and a specialist consultancy organisation within the consortium will ensure the project methodology is rigorous and sufficiently wide-ranging. They will also ensure that recommendations are critically assessed and respect methodological principles of the best world-wide standards. Additional research partners have committed to be involved in the project through the stakeholder forum.
If you would like to be involved in the project as a stakeholder, please get in touch through the Contact links on this website.

STYLE has also been working with other SPIRE4 projects (MEASURE & SAMT) to develop harmonised recommendationos for Sustainability Tools and Methodologies for SPIRE projects. This document is available here: SPIRE4-Harmonised Recommendations
Recommendations from STYLE have also been summarised in this peer reviewed article: Everyday Industry—Pragmatic approaches for integrating sustainability into industry decision making, Sustainable Production and Consumption, Volume 13, 2018, Pages 93-101 (http://bit.ly/SPC-STYLE)
STYLE has produced six 'Insight' documents to highlight issues and recommendations of using sustainability evaluation tools in industry project teams. A pdf containing all of the STYLE Insights is available here: STYLE Insights
The STYLE Roadmap provides a interactive summary of the key recommendations from the project. The full interactive pdf is available here: STYLE Roadmap
A key recommendation of STYLE was the need to develop an Ideal Toolkit for the STYLE scenario. This document details the high-level features and functions of this toolkit: STYLE Ideal Toolkit Framework
