INSPIREWATER is an EU funded project which will enable process industry companies to implement sustainable water treatment solutions as part of a corporate sustainability strategy. This will be achieved via the development, demonstration and exploitation of innovative, eco-efficient technologies which will support sustainable water resources management.
INSPIREWATER technologies will increase water and resource efficiency by 20-30% in the process industry. The project will focus initially on the steel and chemical industries, with the long-term goal of applying the technologies across further process industry sectors for maximum impact.
The INSPIREWATER project comprises partners representing the steel and chemical industries, technology and innovation SME’s, research organisations and dissemination and exploitation experts. The collaboration of these partners forms an exceptional team to deliver quality innovation and striking impact in the process industry. The emphasis on deployment and impact within the project reflects the target set by SPIRE SRA, the European Innovation Partnership (EIP) on ‘Water’ and the EU Commission’s Roadmap on Resource efficiency. Additionally the project will implement European directives and policies in Water Management.

INSPIREWATER aimed at increasing the efficiency of water and raw materials in the process industry. We used novel and established resource-efficient technologies to reduce water and energy consumption, the use of chemicals and the amount of waste. We have been very successful in this regard. Results can be found in the "Outcomes" and "Deliverables" tabs. This is supported by holistic water management, which complements the existing management structures in companies in the process industry. The results can also be found in the tab "Outcomes" and "Deliverables". The results of the project will support Europe to take a leading role in environmentally friendly production and in the market of industrial water treatment, which will help to create new highly qualified jobs in Europe.

There are two levels of integration into industry which will enable new holistic solutions for companies. On the first level, INSPIREWATER has shown how a generic water management framework for the process industry can be integrated into existing corporate management structures to provide a holistic solution. A holistic approach to water management includes life-cycle thinking, resource efficiency and using Key Performance Indicators which have proved effective by other current EU projects in this area. The approach also includes the facilitation of technology implementation. The framework is based on the CEN Workshop Agreement CWA SUSTAINWATER, and will be further developed in this project.
The second level addresses the innovative technology solutions themselves. New technical solutions are required to meet different treatment challenges so that a new level of resource efficiency can be achieved. INSPIREWATER demonstrated and exploited new solutions for some of the most important treatment challenges that today prevent water saving and water reuse in the steel and chemical industries including:
The holistic framework and individual technologies having been proven and integrated, it is crucial to the success of the project that INSPIREWATER’s work is widely disseminated and exploited by industry to guarantee maximum uptake and impact.
WP 1: Holisitc water and resource management system: developed a holistic water treatment framework for more resource efficient water management with pre-requisites to be integrated into existing management systems and to facilitate innovative technology uptake. Key performance indicators and LCA were part of that work.
WP 2: System configuration and technology adaption: included the necessary technology adaptation to prepare for different applications. The technologies included in the INSPIREWATER project were in a development stage (TRL 4-5 for the targeted applications) that allows demonstration with only limited development work. This preparation work was done in WP 2. Furthermore if the Demonstration (WP 3-5) results in the need for additional development to improve and adapt the technologies, this was carried out in WP 2 as well.
In WP 3-5: Demonstration and performance evaluation: the developed solutions were demonstrated and validated at 3 sites: ArcelorMittal (Spain), CLARIANT (Spain), SANDVIK (Sweden), representing different technological challenges in the steel and chemical industry. This allowed the achievement of higher TRL levels for the investigated technologies and system solutions. Both the management framework and technology solutions were demonstrated and tested.
WP 6: Exploitation and market uptake: The work package provided a robust mechanism to ensure efficient exploitation of project results for the demonstrated technologies including the support for verification and implementation as well as business models.
WP 7: Dissemination and communication: was coordinated based on the dissemination and communication strategy for identified target groups including different information channels like a website, seminars, workshops, conferences, and brochures.
WP 8: Project Management: The project management ensured the smooth operation and execution of the project including coordination of activities and contacts with the Commission.

The main object of the Institute’s work is the optimization of steel production processes and its infrastructure. One of the key research aspects is the optimization of water and energy consumption.
BLUE-tec is located in Wageningen, in the Netherlands. The company develops promising technologies that improve water and nutrient recovery with focus on membrane contactor processes. 5 employees and one student intern from Wageningen University are now working at BLUE-tec. The team provides guidance, support and practical application, on bench and pilot scale in sustainable process water technology. Main technological focus is development and application of forward osmosis.

The University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) is one of the leading Swiss universities of applied sciences and has a current enrolment of about 10 500 undergraduate and graduate students. The FHNW School of Life Sciences (HLS) is located in the centre of the internationally leading life sciences region, the trinational Basel area (CH-F-D) featuring a strong representation of chemical and pharmaceutical industry and world leading research institutes.
