The aim
LEADS aims to accelerate the path towards the European Union’s target of becoming the first carbon-neutral continent by 2050, in line with the Green Deal, ‘Fit for 55’ and 2030 Climate Target Plan. The challenge will be tackled by creating a pipeline of Carbon Capture Use and Storage (CCUS) projects and supporting them to mature to full scale, using results from previously EU-funded projects (notably Horizon 2020) and, as such, unlocking the carbon reduction potential that is embedded in H2020-supported Research & Development results.
The concept
Therefore, the project will bridge the gap from research to deployment for CCUS projects in Europe by building an innovation pipeline of Horizon 2020/ Horizon Europe projects and supporting innovation owners in overcoming the main bottlenecks and reaching final investment decisions. Furthermore, LEADS will deliver a set of measures to assess and select the most promising projects, coach them, and enable them to apply to the Innovation Fund. A set of reusable IF tools will be created. Synergy mechanisms between H2020/HEU and IF will also be created by aligning the CCUS up-scaling potential with IF targets.

Work Package 1
Mapping, Assessment, and Selection
Objectives: Mapping Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe projects with high potential to apply for the Innovation Fund, assessing their readiness, and identifying any gaps.
Work Package 2
Coaching and Capacity Building
Objectives: Supporting the projects in addressing identified gaps, developing a comprehensive understanding of the requirements of a successful Innovation Fund application, and providing support for these applications.
Work Package 3
Building the Innovation Pipeline and Promoting Synergies
Objectives: Creating and operationalising a continuous innovation pipeline from EU Framework Programmes to deployment, with a specific focus on Carbon Capture Use and Storage (CCUS) projects.
Work Package 4
Tools and Services
Objectives: Developing a series of reusable tools and documents as a concrete legacy of the LEADS project results, to be utilised by relevant stakeholders. These resources will facilitate understanding of the Innovation Fund Programme application process and foster replication.
Work Package 5
Dissemination, Communication, and Exploitation
Objectives: Disseminating the project results to a broad community of users, from key stakeholders to the general public and ensuring the effective exchange of best practices and active engagement through robust and transparent communication and awareness-raising campaigns. Moreover, this work package will define the exploitation strategy and replication plan, and strategise incorporating other relevant funding sources at both EU and national/regional levels.
Work Package 6
Management and Coordination
Objectives: Ensuring the effective management of the project by adhering to the established schedule and budget, achieving the project objectives efficiently, and implementing a system for continuous evaluation and monitoring.

Press Release 16 May 2024: From Horizon to market: New projects support mature European technological innovation for a clean and sustainable energy transition through the Innovation Fund programme
Press Release 03 December 2024: €2.4 Billion Available to Fund Innovative Net-Zero Technologies
From Horizon to market : Deployment of a European innovation pipeline
Five Coordination and Support Actions (CSAs) funded under the topic HORIZON-CL5-2023-D2-01-07: ‘Support for the deployment of R&I results for climate mitigation. Synergies with the ETS Innovation Fund’ aim to support the deployment of research and innovation results for climate mitigation technologies from Horizon 2020 to the Innovation Fund and other funding programmes related to decarbonisation. The projects will promote and facilitate the transition of mature, promising low-carbon technologies form Horizon 2020/Horizon Europe to the Innovation Fund and to market deployment.
The five initiatives are:
LEADS - Carbon Capture Use and Storage (CCUS)
2DPLOY - Low-Carbon Technologies in Energy-Intensive Industries
REALIZE and DIAMONDS4IF - Renewable Energy Generation
H2IF - Energy Storage and Hydrogen
On 22 and 23 April 2024 in Brussels (Belgium), the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) organised a two-day event gathering the five projects, and on 16 May 2024 a joint press release was issued, offering an overview of the meeting and the five CSAs.
